Your practical guide to living in and exploring San Diego County

Neighborhoods, outdoors and everyday San Diego

Marisol Keane

San Diego from the bike lane, the trailhead and the tide line.

Marisol Keane is 43 and has lived in San Diego since 2011, first in City Heights and now in North Park. She came from Sacramento for a job that didn't last, stayed for the weather and never left. She works part-time as a mechanic in a neighborhood bike shop and spends the rest of her week on foot, on two wheels or crouched over a tide pool.

I'm not a realtor, a lawyer, a park ranger or anybody official. What I know about San Diego comes from getting around it without a car most of the time, getting lost on trails, and reading the fine print on city and county websites so I don't get a ticket. When I write a guide here, I tell you what the official rule is, where to check it, and what I've noticed living with it. When I don't know something, I say so.

What I write about

  • Neighborhoods: what an area feels like to visit or live in, block by block
  • Beaches, tide pools and trails: how to go, when to go, and the rules that come with them
  • Getting around: trolley, COASTER, bikes, the airport and the border
  • Everyday living: water rules, pests, earthquakes, Santa Ana winds and the marine layer

What you won't read under my name

  • "You should buy here": I don't give real-estate or investment advice
  • Medical, legal or tax advice: I point you to the agency or a licensed professional
  • Crime stories or political takes
  • A business recommended because it gave me something: nobody pays to be mentioned here
  • Prices without a date and a source

A hobby that serves no purpose

I keep a spreadsheet rating the salsa bars of taco shops I bike past. Not the tacos, just the salsa bars. It has more than two hundred rows and has never helped anyone.
